Crafting the Ultimate Summer Experience: Stone Fruit Sangria and a Decadent Cheeseboard
As the days grow longer and the sun shines brighter, summer beckons us outdoors to gather with loved ones. What better way to celebrate the season than with a vibrant, refreshing drink and an equally stunning spread of delicious bites? This year, elevate your summer entertaining with our absolute favorite, an exquisite stone fruit sangria, perfectly complemented by a beautifully assembled cheeseboard.
Sangria, with its Spanish roots, is synonymous with festive, relaxed gatherings. Its beauty lies in its simplicity and incredible versatility. Our signature sangria recipe is a seasonal chameleon, adapting effortlessly to whatever fresh, ripe fruit is at its peak. In the early days of summer, think juicy local strawberries and sweet watermelon. As July and August roll in, the stars of the show become succulent nectarines, ripe peaches, or delicate apricots, transforming the drink with their unique flavors. Even in the cooler months, you can swap in bright, zesty citrus fruits for a delightful winter iteration. The key is to maintain the fruit-to-liquid ratio, ensuring a consistently scrumptious result every time.
I recently had the pleasure of serving this particular stone fruit sangria at my husband’s birthday celebration, and it was an absolute hit. To create an unforgettable culinary experience, I collaborated with Castello Cheese, a brand renowned for its exceptional quality and diverse range. Together, we crafted a summery cheeseboard designed to perfectly harmonize with the sangria, offering a delightful interplay of flavors and textures that truly elevated the occasion.

Building Your Dream Summer Cheeseboard: A Guide to Flavors and Textures
Creating an impressive cheeseboard might seem intimidating, but with a few simple guidelines, it becomes an enjoyable artistic endeavor. The secret lies in variety – offering a spectrum of tastes and textures that will delight every palate. For our summer spread, I started with a selection of Castello cheeses that are consistently reliable and incredibly flavorful.
- Castello Extra-Creamy Danish Blue: A true showstopper, this cheese is a go-to for platters. Its rich, tangy, and wonderfully creamy profile offers a bold counterpoint to sweeter elements on the board. Its distinct character adds an exciting layer of complexity.
- Castello Tickler Extra-Mature Cheddar: This sweet and nutty cheddar has quickly become a family favorite. Its crumbly yet firm texture and deep, complex flavor provide a satisfying, robust anchor for the board.
- Castello Brie: A classic choice, Brie brings a luxurious, buttery creaminess to the selection. Its mild, earthy notes and soft, spreadable texture make it universally appealing and an excellent partner for fruit and jam.
- Castello Aged Havarti: Offering a delightful tang and a slightly crystalline texture, this aged Havarti adds another dimension. Its semi-hard consistency and nuanced flavor profile complement the softer and sharper cheeses beautifully, ensuring a comprehensive tasting experience.
Once you’ve curated your selection of cheeses – aiming for a delightful mix of crumbly, creamy, tangy, and milky varieties – it’s time for the artistic arrangement. This is where your creativity truly shines! The goal is to fill every remaining space on the board, creating a visual feast as much as a culinary one. Incorporate an assortment of crackers, fresh seasonal fruits that bask in the sun, and delectable spreads to complete the mosaic of flavors.

Variety in crackers and breads is just as important as the cheese selection. For this board, I chose small, crisp crostini crackers, delicate round wafer crackers, and buttery breadstick crackers. This trio offered diverse crunch and texture, providing the perfect vehicle for various cheeses and spreads. Consider also adding slices of artisanal baguette or gluten-free alternatives to cater to all guests.
Seasonal fruits are non-negotiable for a summer cheeseboard. I gravitated towards the vibrant, juicy strawberries and sweet cherries abundant at the market. To add a touch of exotic flair and an intriguing texture, I also included some beautiful passionfruit. While primarily a garnish due to its intense flavor and captivating appearance, a few of its tart seeds wonderfully cut through the richness of the extra-mature cheddar, creating a surprising and delicious combination. Beyond these, consider adding plump grapes, sliced figs, melon wedges, or even dried fruits like apricots and dates for year-round appeal.
No cheeseboard is complete without something to spread. I nestled in a small bowl of store-bought fig jam, which offers a delightful sweetness and complex flavor profile that pairs wonderfully with both savory and creamy cheeses. If you prefer a homemade touch, you could easily whip up your own 10-minute any-fruit chia jam – a quick and healthy option that allows for endless flavor customization.

Mastering the Art of Cheeseboard Presentation
Presentation is key to making your cheeseboard truly spectacular and inviting. When styling, always think in layers and varying heights. Don’t just place items flat; pop a few smaller fruits on top of the cheese wedges, or slice some fruit in half to reveal their vibrant cross-sections. This adds visual interest and demonstrates the freshness of your ingredients. Tuck a few breadsticks strategically around the cheese, creating a sense of natural abundance, and don’t be afraid to sprinkle a few cracker crumbs around for a relaxed, “lived-in” feel.
One of my top tips for an approachable cheeseboard is to “dig into the cheese” before your guests arrive. Slice a few pieces off the harder cheeses and arrange them on top, or cut a beautiful wedge of the brie. This simple act makes the board look less pristine and more inviting, signaling to your guests that it’s meant to be enjoyed immediately. People are often shy to be the first to cut into a perfect block of cheese, so by starting the process for them, you encourage everyone to dive right in and feel comfortable indulging.
I also love to use small, decorative dishes or ramekins. These are fantastic for filling in empty spaces on the board, adding another layer of texture and color, and containing smaller items like olives, nuts, or jams. The overall impression you want to create is one of generous abundance. Pile everything on, creating an overflowing display that screams “feast!” This not only looks stunning but also ensures there’s plenty for everyone to enjoy throughout your gathering.

The Star of the Show: Our Refreshing Stone Fruit Sangria Recipe
While the cheeseboard offers a delightful array of tastes, our Stone Fruit Sangria truly shines as the refreshing centerpiece of your summer celebration. For optimal flavor and enjoyment, it’s highly recommended to plan a day ahead. Allowing the sangria to chill overnight gives the sugar ample time to dissolve completely, creating a smooth, balanced sweetness. More importantly, this extended marination period allows the beautiful, vibrant flavors of the fresh fruit to thoroughly meld and infuse with the red wine and brandy. The result is a richer, more complex, and incomparably delicious beverage.
Of course, if spontaneous entertaining calls, the sangria is still absolutely delicious if you prepare it in the afternoon and serve it in the evening. However, that overnight rest truly unlocks its fullest potential, transforming it into a drink that lingers delightfully on the palate. The infusion process softens the alcohol notes and amplifies the natural sweetness and aroma of the fruits, creating a harmonious blend that is utterly irresistible. This is why sangria is not just a drink, but an experience in itself – a testament to the magic of simple ingredients coming together over time.
