Embracing the Dawn: A Parent’s Guide to Early Mornings and Wholesome Living
Hello, wonderful readers! I trust those of you who celebrated the recent long weekend in North America enjoyed a truly refreshing break. It’s a precious time to unwind, reconnect with loved ones, and perhaps, like me, gain a fresh perspective on the subtle rhythms of daily life. For many of us, the arrival of summer often brings changes, not just in weather, but in our routines, particularly for parents.
This morning, as the first rays of sunlight began to paint the sky, a profound realization dawned on me. Before I became a mother, the precise moment the sun rose in summer was a detail entirely lost on me. My mornings typically began at a more leisurely 7:45 AM, often after a luxurious eight to nine hours of uninterrupted sleep. Those were the days of waking naturally, stretching slowly, and easing into the day without an immediate agenda.

Now, my internal clock is exquisitely calibrated to the sunrise, which, in the peak of summer, means around 5 AM. Why the precise knowledge? Because the sun serves as an exceptionally effective, albeit unyielding, alarm clock for my little “tomato-stealer” with the pudgy wrists (you’ll see him if you scroll down!). The soft glow filtering through the curtains is enough to signal the start of a new day for him, and consequently, for me.
The Unexpected Charm of Early Mornings
Despite the initial jolt of early waking, I’ve actually grown to appreciate these pre-dawn hours. There’s a distinct tranquility that blankets the city before it awakens to its usual hustle and bustle. From our high-rise apartment, the water below appears like an expanse of glass, perfectly still and reflecting the nascent light. The urban landscape, usually a symphony of sounds and constant movement, takes on a peaceful, almost pristine quality. It’s a quietude that allows for reflection, a moment of calm before the delightful, yet demanding, chaos of parenting truly begins. In these serene moments, I often find myself wishing I could pad around barefoot in a lush, grassy backyard, a giant mug of steaming coffee in hand, soaking in the stillness.
But then, the classic adage always comes to mind: “the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.” We often romanticize what we don’t have, overlooking the realities that come with it. A sprawling backyard, while idyllic in concept, also brings with it the less glamorous task of maintenance.

And then I remember: I’d have to mow it. This simple thought usually brings me back to appreciating the conveniences of high-rise living, free from yard work, even if it means sacrificing that barefoot-in-the-grass fantasy. It’s a gentle reminder to find contentment in the present and embrace the unique advantages of our current circumstances.
The Quest for Adequate Sleep: A Daily Challenge
The only significant downside to rising with the sun is the paramount importance of going to bed at a decent hour. My previous eight-to-nine-hour sleep regimen has, since becoming a parent, been truncated to a more modest six hours. Thankfully, these six hours are now consecutive, a small victory achieved by moving the baby into his older brother’s room. Yet, despite knowing the benefits, it’s incredibly challenging to tuck myself in before 11 PM. The evenings, after the children are asleep, often feel like the only time I have for myself, a precious window for personal pursuits.
There are always so many captivating books calling my name (I’m currently immersed in the gripping pages of The Lake House, which I simply can’t put down!). Then there’s the allure of a relaxing bubble bath, a moment of soothing self-care. And, of course, the ever-tempting re-runs of Modern Family—a perfect antidote to a busy day. These small indulgences become powerful draws, making early bedtime feel like an enormous sacrifice.

However, I’m making a conscious effort to prioritize sleep. This morning served as a rather dramatic wake-up call (pun intended!). At 6 AM, still groggy, I accidentally poured buttermilk into my tea – a minor mishap, but a clear sign of impaired judgment. Moments later, I missed the kitchen counter entirely, dropping my bowl of oatmeal. The porcelain shattered, sending gloppy porridge splattering far and wide across the kitchen floor. It was a messy, frustrating, and utterly avoidable incident that unequivocally underscored the necessity for more rest. A bit more discipline in my evening routine would undoubtedly benefit my mornings and prevent such chaotic starts.

From Client Projects to Personal Cravings: A Culinary Journey
Beyond the personal reflections on sleep and early mornings, the past couple of weeks have been incredibly busy on the professional front, primarily focused on recipe development for various clients. This work is both rewarding and challenging, often involving continuous recipe testing. For example, I might find myself on a “cookie bender,” eating oatmeal cookies for three consecutive days to ensure the recipe is perfectly balanced and delicious. It’s a sweet, albeit sometimes overwhelming, aspect of the job!
Interestingly, this phase of intense testing recently led to an unexpected, yet mutually beneficial, arrangement. I delivered a massive tray of test recipes to a group of hungry construction workers who are currently renovating the penthouse in my building. They were incredibly appreciative, and frankly, I think we all benefited from this exchange – they got a hearty snack, and I found willing taste-testers for my copious batches of experimental treats.
After such indulgent periods of recipe testing, my palate inevitably craves a reset. All I truly desire to eat are vibrant green juices, overflowing salad bowls, and an abundance of fresh, seasonal vegetables from the farmer’s market, complemented by a lean protein. This shift back to lighter, more wholesome fare is a natural rebalancing act for my body and mind. It’s during these times that simple, yet incredibly satisfying, dishes like creamy hummus become staples in my kitchen.
Introducing Black Sesame Hummus: A Healthy and Flavorful Twist
This particular hummus recipe is a testament to the beauty of simple ingredients with a unique twist. Instead of traditional tahini, I’ve opted for black sesame seeds, which lend a distinct, nutty, and slightly earthy flavor, alongside a beautiful dark hue. It’s not an overly complicated or “fancy” creation, but I was eager to share it, primarily because of how much joy I found in photographing its unique texture and color. More importantly, it has become a weekly essential in my fridge. Keeping a batch of homemade, nutritious dip readily available makes healthy snacking – like munching on fresh carrot sticks, cucumber slices, or bell pepper strips – incredibly easy and consistently delicious.
Hummus is a cornerstone of the Mediterranean diet, celebrated for its versatility and nutritional benefits. Made primarily from chickpeas, it’s a fantastic source of plant-based protein, dietary fiber, and healthy fats from olive oil. Our black sesame version adds an extra layer of antioxidants and minerals from the unique seeds, elevating both its flavor and health profile. It’s perfect as a dip, a spread in sandwiches, or even as a base for vibrant salad bowls. Enjoy this delightful twist on a classic, and let it inspire your healthy eating habits!
