Homemade SunGold Kiwi Frozen Yogurt: Your Perfect Summer Indulgence

There’s nothing quite like the refreshing delight of homemade frozen yogurt, especially during the warm embrace of summer. It offers all the creamy satisfaction of traditional ice cream but with a significantly lighter feel, making it an ideal treat for any time of day. This particular recipe takes inspiration from a cherished childhood flavor, reimagined with the vibrant, sweet essence of Zespri SunGold Kiwifruit. Prepare to indulge in a dessert that’s not only incredibly delicious but also bursting with natural goodness.

The Sweet Discovery of SunGold Kiwifruit

My love affair with the golden kiwi began during an unforgettable trip to Australia. Those who followed my adventures on Instagram might recall my absolute obsession with this incredibly sweet fruit, so delicious it could practically make your toes curl! Upon returning home, I was thrilled to discover that this elusive golden gem had a name: the Zespri SunGold Kiwifruit, proudly grown in the lush orchards of New Zealand. Finding it locally, especially in mass quantities at my Costco, felt like striking culinary gold. Since then, it has become a staple in my kitchen, a constant source of sweetness and nutrition.

These remarkable fruits hold a special place in our household. My youngest son, with his endearing toddler pronunciations, refers to them affectionately as “wee-wees.” The moment he spots them in the fruit basket, a symphony of excited screams ensues, demanding their immediate attention. Leaving them within his line of sight guarantees a persistent, adorable chorus throughout the day, a testament to their irresistible appeal, even to the pickiest eaters.

What makes SunGold Kiwifruit truly stand out is its extraordinary sweetness, coupled with a delightful tropical nuance reminiscent of passionfruit. This unique flavor profile creates an addictive quality, making you crave “more and more and more” with every bite. Beyond their captivating taste, these little powerhouses are incredibly nutrient-packed, solidifying their status as a true superfruit.

Unlocking the Nutritional Power of SunGold Kiwi

Don’t let their small size fool you; Zespri SunGold Kiwifruit are nutritional titans. A mere serving of two SunGold kiwifruit packs an astonishing amount of essential vitamins and minerals:

  • Vitamin C Champion: They contain up to three times more vitamin C than an average orange. This potent antioxidant is crucial for immune function, skin health, and overall vitality, helping your body fight off free radicals and stay robust.
  • Potassium Powerhouse: Offering as much potassium as a medium banana, SunGold kiwifruit supports healthy blood pressure, muscle function, and nerve health. Potassium is vital for maintaining fluid balance and preventing muscle cramps, especially important during active summer days.
  • Fiber Rich: With the same amount of fiber as a bowl of bran flakes, these kiwifruit are excellent for digestive health. The fiber aids in promoting regularity, preventing constipation, and supporting a healthy gut microbiome, which is foundational for overall well-being.
  • Actinidin Advantage: Zespri Kiwifruit uniquely contains actinidin, a natural enzyme that aids in the digestion of proteins. This can be particularly beneficial after a meal, helping your body break down food more efficiently and potentially reducing feelings of bloating.
  • Antioxidant Boost: Beyond Vitamin C, SunGold kiwifruit contains a range of other antioxidants that help protect your cells from damage, contributing to long-term health and disease prevention.

Incorporating such a nutrient-dense fruit into your diet, especially in a delicious treat like frozen yogurt, is a fantastic way to boost your health without compromising on flavor.

Crafting the Perfect Kiwi Frozen Yogurt

The tropical sweetness of Zespri SunGold Kiwifruit truly shines in frozen yogurt. The delightful tartness of the yogurt creates a harmonious balance with the kiwi’s naturally sweet and slightly tangy flavor, resulting in a perfectly balanced and incredibly refreshing dessert. Whether you own an ice cream maker or not, you can absolutely create this wonderful treat at home.

While an ice cream maker isn’t strictly necessary, I highly recommend using one if you have access to it. The machine’s paddle churns air into the mixture as it freezes, producing a wonderfully fluffy, incredibly smooth, and creamy texture that rivals your favorite yogurt shop. The result is a lighter, more ethereal frozen yogurt that melts beautifully on the tongue. Once churned, I love transferring mine to a freezer bag fitted with a star icing tip, allowing me to pipe it into elegant swirls for a professional and inviting presentation.

If you’re making this without an ice cream maker, don’t worry! The key is to pre-freeze your kiwis (peeled and chopped) and then blend them with the yogurt and sugar until smooth. Then, transfer the mixture to an airtight container and freeze, stirring every 30-60 minutes for the first few hours to break up ice crystals and achieve a smoother consistency. It might not be as airy as the churned version, but it will still be incredibly delicious and satisfying.

Given its simple ingredients – fruit and yogurt – this homemade frozen yogurt could even pass as a delightful and healthy breakfast option! It’s a fantastic way to start your day with a boost of nutrients and a smile.

SunGold Kiwi Frozen Yogurt

By: Jennifer Pallian
This easy 3-ingredient homemade kiwi frozen yogurt is a healthy, delightful treat that can be made with or without an ice cream maker.
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 25 minutes
Servings: 2

Ingredients

  • 1 cup full-fat Greek yogurt
  • 4 chilled Zespri SunGold Kiwifruit peeled and chopped (plus more for serving, if desired)
  • ¼ cup + up to 2 tbsp more granulated sugar
  • Toppings as desired (I used crumbled graham crackers, but you could add other chopped fruit, or granola, too)

Instructions

  • Combine the yogurt, kiwi, and 1/4 cup of the sugar in a blender container (in that order). Blend on high speed for 60 seconds, or until completely smooth. Taste and blend in remaining sugar if more sweetness is desired.
  • Process in an ice cream maker according to manufacturer’s instructions until it reaches the consistency of soft serve. Eat right away for a soft texture, or transfer to an airtight container and freeze until firmer for a scoopable frozen yogurt.
  • To make without an ice cream maker, ensure your kiwis are frozen in advance (peeled and chopped). Proceed with blending as directed. Freeze the blended mixture in an airtight container for at least 3-4 hours, stirring every 30-60 minutes during the first few hours to prevent large ice crystals and achieve a smoother consistency.

Tips for the Best Homemade Frozen Yogurt Experience

  • Quality Ingredients are Key: Always opt for high-quality, full-fat Greek yogurt. The fat content contributes significantly to the creaminess and prevents the frozen yogurt from becoming too icy. While low-fat versions can work, the texture might be less luxurious.
  • Sweetness to Your Liking: The beauty of homemade frozen yogurt is that you can control the sugar. Zespri SunGold Kiwifruit are naturally sweet, so start with ¼ cup of sugar and add more incrementally until it reaches your preferred level of sweetness. You can also experiment with natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup for a different flavor profile.
  • Chill Everything Thoroughly: For the best results, ensure your kiwifruit and yogurt are thoroughly chilled before blending. If using an ice cream maker, make sure its bowl is frozen solid, typically requiring at least 12-24 hours in the freezer. This ensures quick freezing and a smoother texture.
  • Don’t Over-Blend: While you want a smooth mixture, over-blending can introduce too much air, which can sometimes lead to an icier texture once frozen. Blend just until the ingredients are fully combined and smooth.
  • Serving Suggestions: This frozen yogurt is fantastic on its own, but it’s also a perfect canvas for toppings. Consider a sprinkle of crumbled graham crackers for texture, a drizzle of honey, fresh berries, toasted coconut flakes, or a handful of your favorite granola. For a more decadent touch, a few chocolate shavings would be divine.
  • Storage: Store any leftover frozen yogurt in an airtight container in the freezer. It’s best enjoyed within a week. If it becomes too firm, let it sit at room temperature for 10-15 minutes to soften slightly before scooping.
