  1. Start with a Base: Choose a sturdy wooden board or an elegant platter as your canvas. A rustic look adds warmth and charm to the presentation.
  2. Add Seafood: Artfully arrange a variety of seafood elements. This could include chilled cooked shrimp (prawns), delicate slices of smoked salmon, and tender bites of baked or smoked fish. For visual impact and a gourmet touch, place bacon-wrapped scallops upright amongst your other selections.
  3. Incorporate Dips: Include small, attractive bowls of complementary dips. A creamy dill dip or a zesty tartar sauce are excellent choices. Position these on opposite sides of the board for visual balance and easy access.
  4. Add Accents: Fill any empty spaces with fresh, vibrant accents. Slices of bright lime, fragrant sprigs of rosemary, and an assortment of olives (green, black, or Kalamata) add color and flavor. A small bowl filled with glistening pomegranate arils will provide a beautiful festive pop.
  5. Include Crackers: Provide a selection of crackers or crusty bread. You can either set a small bowl of them nearby or strategically tuck them onto the board for guests to easily pair with their seafood choices.

Planning Your Spread: How Many Appetizers Per Person?

Mastering the art of holiday hosting often comes down to knowing how much food to prepare. The ideal number of appetizers per person can vary greatly depending on the type and duration of your event. Here’s a quick guide to help you plan your perfect festive spread:

  1. Before Dinner (Light Grazing): If you’re serving appetizers as a prelude to a full dinner, plan for approximately 4-6 bites per person. This amount is designed to keep guests pleasantly satisfied and stave off hunger without filling them up too much before the main course arrives. Focus on variety rather than quantity.
  2. Cocktail Party (No Dinner): For a standalone cocktail party where appetizers are the primary food source, you’ll need to offer more substantial options. Aim for 12-15 bites per person over a few hours. This ensures everyone has enough food to feel satiated throughout the evening and can graze comfortably. Include a mix of lighter and heartier options.
  3. Mixed Buffet (Alongside Other Dishes): When appetizers are part of a larger buffet that includes other main dishes or sides, provide about 6-8 bites per person. This allows guests to sample a good variety of your delicious starters without feeling overwhelmed or overloaded before trying other dishes.

For longer events or gatherings with particularly enthusiastic eaters, it’s always wise to lean toward the higher end of the recommended range. Always consider the specific preferences and appetites of your guests, as well as the overall timing and flow of the event, for any necessary adjustments. Thoughtful planning ensures everyone enjoys the delicious offerings!
